Thank you for sharing this, especially the breakdowns. The style looks spot on.

    Man I suck at nodes.

That looks gorgeous, thanks for sharing the shader setup!
I'm looking forward to trying to get my head around it when I get some spare time, nodes still bake my noodle.

    Wow gorgeous!!
Thanks a lot for the breakdown... but I really can't reproduce it! Nodes are not my friends...
I have a project that could really use that kind of shader setup.... Would you mind sharing a simple scene so I could manage to understand it? Please?
    Thx a lot !

Thanks everyone! So glad you like it.

Cyroz - is there a particular part you're having trouble with? Or just stringing all the pieces together?

Oh, crap. If NICK has to 'go over' it, I'm sure it's far beyond my comprehension....

Has Celshader seen these? She'll luv 'em.

Haha, I'm sure it's nothing that complicated, but Tobian is right - it's always hard to go through someone else's nodes! It'd be helpful if Lightwave had a nodal environment more like Quartz Composer, with easier variable control and embedded annotations.

If I get a chance later tonight or this weekend, I'll try to put together a simple demo scene.

That's mainly cuz I'm still a noob with nodes so don't feel bad. The screen grabs were a little hard to read so I wasn't sure what was piping into what. I get the idea behind the setup, but for me, reading a nodal network may as well be a foreign language.

A demo scene would be great! Cuz I love the look.

Go figure! Is it my english or my complete ignorance of nodes, I understand the some parts of the process, As Nick said, I don't really understand what goes to what... but a demo scene would be very generous!
It's been years now that I tell myself to have a go with nodes, but I always finish the oldschool way...
Anyway great work, and thank for having replied.

Well...that didn't go so well. I can't open my edge projection shader or load any of the nodes without Modeller instantly crashing. Disabling shader previews helps...for about 4 seconds, then it crashes instantly. Sigh. Will have to debug that mess some other time.

For now I'm attaching a basic example of the other shading pieces, including both the toon shading and the shadow setup. I know the original blog article was more about the ideas than practical setup, so I hope this helps explain things a little more clearly!

No! Don't feel stupid. You're not, the original blog article just wasn't written well for recreating the exact setup.
