    UV mapping tutorials

    Greetings!

    I am a newbie to Lightwave, and am going through the book Essential Lightwave v9. Even though I am on Lightwave 11.5, the book came highly recommended. I am on chapter 11 on UV Mapping, and unfortunately, they use plugins that don't work on my iMac. Can anyone suggest any instructional material that covers UV mapping basics for Lightwave 11.5?

    it might not be what you want to hear but... install Blender, UV map there, and bring it over to Lightwave.
    UV-ing without the PLG plugin is very hard, imo...

    ABF in LW11.5 is good, but not so much for technical models.

    3Dcoat is another alternative, though not free, $350 >

    Check out this training from Adam Gibson. I have not taken this training video but own a bunch of his training material. He is very detailed and a fantastic trainer especially for newbies. You can see how well this works for you. Having gone down the path of trying to learn many different software packages at the same time I would suggest focus on learning lightwave. Once you have done that then consider what you enjoy doing the most. If you love UV/texturing then looking at either 3DC or Zbrush as options. Or the free blender is another option.

    There's also the 11.5 "up to speed" courseware that Dan Ablan is releasing today which has a bit on the new UV mapping tool, which I'm looking forward to playing with. Hope it's as good as the PLG tools.

    You could get away with really simple UV maps using the new ABF feature, coupled with 'Select Path' and saving edge selections regularly.

    I have 3DC and it is well worth the money. It's got some excellent UV mapping techniques plus retopology toolsets and as Erikals said, it also has model sculpting and live UV texture painting as part of the package.

    You can checkout the 3DC forums, as sometimes there are people selling off there version, which will allow you to purchase and then update (when the new V4 comes out) for less than the retail of V4. (similar to this thread : http://3d-coat.com/forum/index.php?s...2&fromsearch=1)

    Thanks, everyone! It would seem that 3D coat comes highly recommended, but I just can't spend the moolah on it right now. Plus I was hoping to learn Lightwave's native tools before trying another software package.

    It seems that the PLG plugins are made for PowerPC macs, but not the newer Intel iMacs.

    I understand what you mean, you don't want to jump into and pay for another package just to achieve a result that was available in a free plugin.

    The PLG plugins most useful feature was to extend you selection between the first and last selected points/edges. Point mode is very nice , because you just clicked from point to point and it would extend the edge (or cut of your UV)

    To achieve this using LW11.5 and the new ABF I have put together a very quick video:

    In this I only use:

    1. edge and point selection, holding SHIFT key down to continuely select additional edges/points
    2. 'select path' - extends your selection between two points/edges/polys
    3. save sets (not needed for this simple bit of geometry, but I just wanted to show you want happens when you save out edge selections as sets)
    4. selecting saved sets (points statics panel - W hotkey)
    4. sel edges (because saving sets saves the selected points not edges, so we swap back to edges for ABF to work)
    5. and finally 'ABF UV Unwrap'.

    The geometry is simple, but you'll get the idea.

    hm, maybe i ditched the ABF for technical models a bit early, seems to be closer to PLG than i previously though...

    Yer, when combined with other tools, it's close. You don't have split via surface, which sometimes came in handy, still it's nearly there. But with saving sets, you can give yourself a incrementally saved set of point selections, which in PLG was a pain in the ***.

    In the second link above, the guy even goes into the reasons for not getting a symmetrical UV map.

    I was literally in doing the exact same thing. I have the essential lightwave v9 opened to the UV section trying to learn how to make better surfaces.

    Thanks all for the links! i'll have to play around with Lightwave's ABF and with 3D coat.
