Does that have GI importance sampling turned on in LW2015?

    Yes.
    Added test:

    LW 2015.3 = 18 min 2 sec
    LW 2015.3 = 14 min 0 sec - importance sampled BG = off - noisy
    LW 11.5 = 13 min 5 sec - noisy

    Rendered on:
Threadripper 3960x (Auto Overclock in Ryzen Master software active)
    RAM 64GB @ 3200 14 14 14 34 1T
    No additional OC done.

I've not installed the Auto Overclock Ryzan master software. That's just native CPU balancing itself.
I'm not sure I have much headroom for overclocking on Air cooling though. Maybe I'll try.

I've got RAM at 3200MHz with slightly slower timings than yours. 16-18-18-35. The RAM is overclocked from 2666MHz.

I've not checked/tried with the importance sampling as off.
Sounds like it gives noisey results like 11.5?

    Ok, minor update and history:

    i7 3930K - hex-core with HT - 4.5GHz - LW 11.5 @ 1 hour 6 mins, 3 seconds
    i7 3930K - hex-core with HT - 4.2GHz - LW 2015.3 @ 1 hour 42 mins 21 secs

    Threadripper 3960X - 24 core HT/SMT - around 4GHz - LW 2015.3 @ 19 mins 13s
    Threadripper 3960X - 24 core HT/SMT - around 4-4.1GHz - LW 2015.3, importance sampling OFF @ 14 mins 31s

2015.3 with GI importance sampling off behaves similarly to 11.6.3 (you're using 11.6.3, not actually 11.5, right?!), producing noisier results in around the same time. With GI importance sampling on, 2015.3 does additional sampling which takes a bit longer, but produces significantly cleaner results.

As subsequent 11.x revisions fixed a bunch of bugs over 11.5, you really should be comparing 11.6.3 not 11.5, unless intentionally avoiding a specific, known bug from later revision. Better put, unless you have a clear justification to use earlier revisions, you should always compare with the latest available for a given version.

Actually, shame on me. I wrote 11.5 as I was thinking that was the latest version of LW 11. I can't even reember the version numbers now.

I do know, that when I ran the benchmark in Februrary 2013, it was the current version of LW 11.x, whatever that was.

    Thanks for posting the details.
I tried Overclocking RAM and CPU manually to some extend. It was fun but not worth it in the end.
    Best Cinebench was 14668.
Now after BIOS update and RAM @ XMP profile (3200) and the auto Overclock in Ryzen Master it is 14243. It runs as stable as my old dual Xeon but at nearly twice the speed and most importantly comfortably quiet. Accroding to your results the 3960X seems to be fine with good air cooling. In my system the GPU benefits from water cooling. It is not reaching the throttle temp anymore in GPU rendering.

Interesting regarding LW is that it scales well with raw thread and clock power (at least rendering, modeler is another story).
I am curious to see the results of ZEN3 chips when they get released.

Hoping that the new Zen3 CPUs push the price down of the Zen 2 3990x 64 core...

    Zen3

early to say, but usually happens after a few months.
seems it will run on 450 470 boards. [cool]
