    10 months ago on a very similar system I replaced just the i7 920 CPU for a new i7 980 on my gaming rig. Almost doubled in speed. I don't know if you can find them at a decent price anymore tho.

    I have 'penned' a MS Excel spreadsheet (xls format, Excel 9.0 circa 1999) for your use. Also I scanned it with ESET.
    Threads 001 all the way through 210 are 'covered' within it.

    If you wish to modify it, please do. Hopefully you will add 0.01 to the version number, and repost the results here in this thread.

    Lewis: Amazing! Did the previous threads 'mold' your choice of Mobo/CPU? Please give details . . . specs are not yet on your home or work 'puter' listings. And what is the cost of the new system?

    On one hand, I am just being nosy; and on the other hand, well . . . that is what this BenchmarkMarbles thread is really about. That is: helping each other out with hardware to run LW in a rendering situation.

    Currently this new RIG is on the table, not put yll ye tin case 'coz i need to swap some things form 3930K (will sell it after swap) so it's:

    1. DualXeon E5-2690 slightly tweaked/overclocked
    2. Asus Z9PE-De8 WS motherboard (Server+Workstation board in one, packed with features)
    3. Corsair H80i Water coolers (2 of them obviously)
    4. OCZ 1250W Gold 80+ Power supply
    5. 64GB DDR3 Gskil RAM
    6. Corsair Obsidian 800D case (i still need to try to fit this new MB inisde of it after when i throw out 3930K, that wont' happen few more days untill is finish all projects and migrate SSD ).
    7. Geforce 660GTX + Geforce 610 GTX
    8. Dell30"+Dell20"+Dell20" monitors (Triple monitor setup so i need 2 GFX cards just for them)
    9. Rest is just DVDRW, several TBs of WD Black/Green HDDs, NAS for backup/storage, etc. etc.. not important for rendering .

    Here is how it looks currently on the table while testing/benching . BTW Cinebench result is 25.2-25.4

    BTW GFX card and RAM on these photos are just temp stuff (pulled out from one of my render slaves just so i can boot/test this ).

    P.S. This scene is really nto favoring Multipel Treaded machines (as Xeanos and so on) 'coz Adaptive Sampling passes last lot longer than intiall AA pass and Lw looses time by distributing Threads (32 in this case) to CPUs so it's not always at 100% and waste some serious time while Brute force AA (more AA less/AS) is much more sutiable for this kind of rigs BUT for sake of testing i leaved it as it is set by Dave Jerrard 'coz otherwise (if i tweak scene) wouldn't have sense for testing .

    P.P.S. i call this machien KRW - Killer Render Workstation .

    "slightly tweaked/overclocked" - how much? I was able to overclock my system (2x Xeons E5-2650) by BLCK from 100 to 103Mhz - do you manage to achieve greater overclocking with your water-cooling sistem?

    BLCK 104 is stable, 105 not so much so yeah pretty much close to what you have. Temperature is not issue problem there (currently my H80i are not at full cooling power (i didn't yet mount 2nd vent)) and tempratrues aren't problem here, the are in 53-57 range on Room temp 25-26 Celsius, it's that BLCK is not really way to get much 'coz Multiplier is locked on Xeons (i hate Intel doign that ) nowdays unlike with older Gulftown cores where i could use BLCK 150-160 on my old i7 970 . Good thing with BLCK on these SB-E Xeons is Turbo Boost frequency (when it's using single/few cores) whcih is now shifted from 3.8Ghz to 4+GHz and that's probably what makes little difference in this scene whcih as I said isn't favoring many Threads machines at all.

    Thanx for sharing the zip with the excel, very useful to see them all together like that. As you can see on that chart, the i7 920 needs 3 hours to render, and the 980x finishes in 1h 29. It did double in speed!

    It's so fast this beast, have you tried rendering 2 instances of layout with the same scene. Then average the time, it will be a truer picture if the scene was optimised.

    Under 30 minutes? maybe!

    I didn't try that yet, might try when i finally put it in my Obsidian 800D case. It't still on the table 'coz PSU cables are too short for any meaningful cable management so I've ordered extension cables and now impatiently waiting .

    I tried 2 instances of LW, only 20 seconds quicker on W5580 x 2 box.

    1:13:17 1 x LW
    1:12:57 2 x LW average

    I7 was all the rage for vpr. But it would seem, the winner of that marbles render thread was:
    Madno Dell Precision T7600 (2x xeon E5-2687 proc= 32 threads) or similar setups as Lewis and JonW.

    My question is: does LW still address only 1 thread at OpenGL and scene refresh (since 9.6). And therefore which will be faster at refreshing heavy scenes, instead of locking up- the i7-3960 or the 2x xeon machine? (And graphics card consideration with dual monitor or 3 monitor?)

    For one threaded operations/applications (modeler for example) an I7 3960 is faster than any of the Dual 8 core Xeons.

    As far as monitors goes, I am back to one huge monitor at 2560 x 1440 resolution. I don't miss having two monitors at all. Having only one is less prone to driver and setup problems, fewer cables, power savings and better performance.
