Speed Modelling Challenge #177 - Fantastic Planet

Speed Modelling Challenge #177 - Fantastic Planet
    *************************************************

    Rules:

    1. Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modelling times is essential. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.
    2. Post a wire-frame and a render at 800x600 or larger.
    3. LightWave must be used for modelling. 3rd party Plug-ins are allowed.
    4. You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.
    5. Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.
    6. The winner is judged by the challenge starter and the pooze is to set up the challenge after next week's .
    *************************************************

This week's topic is: Fantastic Planet

Model something from the 1973 film, Fantastic Planet

This animation has many plants, creatures & machines with primitive-ish looking geometry in it ..but will this be a case of easier-said-than-done?
Increasing modelling time to 2hrs to encourage any shy newcomers & lurkers out there to give this challenge a go. The usual LW modelling speedsters-on-steroids can limit themselves to the standard 60 minutes if they want to

    Time limit: 120 minutes
    Deadline: Wed. 27th June 2012. 22:00 G.M.T.

I've been thinking for a long time this would be a great movie to do in 3D, but just stick to the original story and script!

Agree about the anteater thing, Shrox Joe Poe - I'd still love to see your wires if you go for it, had trouble working it out at this end and dared to use boolean (which was probably a mistake!) :S

Shrox -does that mean we can expect to see him in 3D glory??

aka - I didn't get too far before I saw your post (I've yet to pick another topic....). Anyway, this is what I had.

    Yours is looking good btw!
As usual in modeling, there are so many ways to go about achieving the same end "result". That being said, and since you asked, my one suggestion would have been to start the model with the ball rotation on a different axis. That way the natural sections of the sphere are already in place to form the (cough) "mouth". I multi-shifted those sections in to form the initial (cough again) opening, made a control loop (or two), pushed a couple points around, then rotated the whole head a bit because the top of the mouth appears to be above the midpoint on the Y (as you rightly show on your model). Then a little flattening of the bottom polys to make "her" (??) sit on the ground a bit nicer. Would have tried to get rid of the star in the forehead, but it doesn't seem to be affecting the surface in rendering afterall.
