Question 'Edge transparency', nodal network, bad edges

I'm trying to get the olde "edge transparency" effect. See attached pic.

The pictured network sorta kinda works, but as indicated it doesn't falloff smoothly as it should. All the bits are in the picture: since IOR=1.0, where is that nasty edge coming from???

    tnx!

it kind of looks like the interpolation is making your transparency over 100% and that always looks weird.
