Speed Modelling Challenge #165 – Steamy!

Speed Modelling Challenge #165 – Steamy!
    *************************************************
    Rules:

    1. Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modeling times is essential. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.
    2. Post a wire-frame and a render at 800x600 or larger.
    3. LightWave must be used for modeling. 3rd party Plug ins are allowed.
    4. You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.
    5. Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.
    6. The winner is judged by the challenge starter and the prize is to set up the challenge after next week's .
    *************************************************

    This week's topic is: Steamy.

Anything that generates steam: kettles, coffee makers, cooking implements or something more ambitious.

    Time limit: 60min.
    Deadline: Wed. 4th April 2012. 22:00 G.M.T.

Very nice XswampX, great textures as usual. I was going to mention something about hygiene, but that floor looks cleaner than my table! (certainly cleaner than my desk ).

Gave it a go, but failed with the first attempt. (Cartoon locomotive.) Wonderfully educational.

My own rules for these challenges requires that the next attempt be something totally different. I may just go for a cup of soup--- maybe I could manage that, LOL.

Hi guys... I finally found some time to join in XswampyX's entry got me thinking of steamed brocoli... so I made something in that direction. Modeling time was just under an hour.

Hope this explains my workflow on the surfaces a bit.... please ask if there are some questions.

The only other thing to add is that I used a crust procedural to get the displacements on the buds... added a bit of height variation to them with a turbulance procedural... and controlled the effected area with a weight map
(basicly the whole of the buds/spheres are weighted 100% and the rest is 0%... just did it this way to get a falloff where it starts... but as an afterthought I didn't need to for this image as I don't think you can really see the transition at any point anyways...

ohh... and I work in linear workflow, save out as HDRI and run it through the Virtual Darkroom image filter and then Colorcorrect a bit in photoshop, add grain and vignette... and quickly/lazily painted in something that hopefully comes through as steam
