Post Animating a robot. Bones or hierarchies?

Related with another topic of my own and now I'm trying to become a rigger (thanks RebelHill for your videos... a lot of information to play with... the money was well spent ) , I started to rig a character made with wood, so this could be a way to achieve a rig:

although my initial attempts were using bones, because probably bending... but now I wonder: If not bending what would be the best way to animate a robot-like character -> parenting elements or using bones? Not squash and stretch expected.

    bones.

meshes as hierarchies only give you more headaches moving and re-orienting pivots, not worth the hassle.
