How many LW users are out there?

Just curious if anyone knows how many LW users are out there? Just getting back into using LW after a 10 year hiatus.

I remember it being very popular when I was using v5.6. Thought I read somewhere that its not as popular as it used to be (I still love it).

Around 100.000 would be my (uneducated) guess.

My guess would be around 10 -15,000 active users with most likely around 200,000 dongles floating around out there somewhere. In our company we have purchased 16 seats over the years, now with changes in the buisness climate we are actively using only 4 with only 2 being upgraded to LW11. (The other two probably soon) Our usage shrinkage has nothing to do with LW's shortcomings - we love it- it's just that our company like many others has had to make cut-backs in personel to survive. So yes, while I think NT has sold a boat load of licenses over the years, I suspect their current user base is very small.

More like 10.000 . I think 100.000 will be all 3d artists combined on this planet.

Seems way to conservative to me.

I know that a decade ago a big LW plugin vendor had ca 15.000 licenses registered. I wonīt mention which one, donīt ask.

Even with LWīs problematic footing, in the last decade the 3d production markets have grown exponentially.

Just for comparison, I remember an Autodesk guy I talked to personally mentioning around 400.000 3dsmax licenses worldwide. Could just be marketing numbers, but he seemed pretty convinced it was accurate.

So no, I donīt think 100.000 "active" LW users is that unreasonable. Lots of people on this planet ;-)

Yeah, 0.0057% of the world population use Max. Now that you mention it the number seems a bit pushed, LOL.

    That's 400,000 "licensed" 3DSMax seats. 7 billion have it on their PC's.

Even if you 10X 400,000 to 4,000,000 (or 0.057% of the world population) that's still a tiny number. I didn't realize just how specialized 3D is.

Oh, you think more? I actually went all humble when I saw your post and suspected 400.000 to be quite a bit too high just for one program.

Ok, I wikied around a bit to approach this from a different and more comprehensive perspective.

There are around 3.150 major cities in the world. Of course you canīt compare a city like mine to New york, but anyway...
Letīs say 100 in mine and 1000 in NY, just for funīs sake.

So letīs assume that thereīs an average of 250 active 3d users in every city. Seems like a reasonably realistic number if you consider architects, web-designers and graphic artists ....I think (Every statistics fan would beat me to death after seeing this post, LOL).

    3150x250=787500 users

I know, I know, totally estimated without any real data. Probably my 100.000 LW users is a bit on the optimistic side, but 15.000 just for LW is way too low..even with the screwed marketing over the last years.

I have no idea how many 3D artists there might be, I just thought there would be more if you figure in other companies 3D packages.

I work in the entertainment department of a large corporation. Almost no one knows anything at all about 3D. The very very few who do, 99% of them only know the word "Maya"...and that is just because they heard it somewhere.
