Exclamation Speed Modelling Challenge #152 – Grandparents' Christmas

Speed Modelling Challenge #152 – Grandparents' Christmas
    *************************************************
    Rules:

    1. Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modeling times is essential. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.
    2. Post a wire-frame and a render at 800x600 or larger.
    3. LightWave must be used for modeling. 3rd party Plug ins are allowed.
    4. You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.
    5. Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.
    *************************************************

This week's topic is: Grandparents' Christmas: Show us a gift for Grandma or Grandpa. Or a gift from Grandma or Grandpa. Or show us something from Grandma or Grandpa's house (Christmas or not). Don't leave me alone over Christmas. Before (or after) partaking the egg nog, may I suggest a nice speed model to keep you sharply prepared for Grandma's witty conversation.

Time Limit - 60 minutes (30 minutes of nap time allowed if you ARE a Grandma or Grandpa.)

    Deadline: Wed. 28th December 2011. 22:00 G.M.T.

mis: Your understanding is correct. Only the modeling is to be timed.

You could model a cube and displacement map a perfect replica of the statue of "David", and that is a valid entry (As long as the cube is modeled in less than an hour. ). I think everyone would love to see something like that, and by all means, it should be posted. It's just not likely to win. Because, at the end of the week, all that's judged is the modeling.

That said, there have been discussions about the issue of modeling taking back seat to surfacing and rendering. I think most agree that a side benefit of the challenge is to witness artists' abilities to blend modeling, surfacing, rendering, etc., to come up with quality in a short period of time.

Anyone, join in if you feel I have misrepresented the contest.

    PLEASE submit something.

    Great sock, Rabbitpenny!
That's not something I hear myself say very often

How did you do the displacement?

Thanks Mr. Iain, sir. The surface is embarrassingly simple. Displacement on the ribs, bump all over. Bump laid in two parts 'cause of the 90 degree turn at the heel. Nodes attached. Also very subtle ffx.

I was afraid the holiday would make for sparse participation. If there aren't some entries soon, I may have to ask permission to double the prize money.

    Nice job, Steven.

My model is done but I can't get any joy with the texturing. Will (hopefully) post later

What about a couple of mini-brandy bottles?

I don't think they will hang around too long.

All of my grandparents passed away before I was born, but I assume this is the type of thing they would send.

Modeling, Textureing, Lighting, Rendering, 45 minutes.
