Exclamation Speed Modeling Challenge #139 – Martial Arts

Speed Modeling Challenge #139 – Martial Arts.
    ************************************************** ***
    Rules:

    1. Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modeling times is essential. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.
    2. Post a wireframe and a render at 800x600 or larger.
    3. LightWave must be used for modeling. 3rd party Plug ins are allowed.
    4. You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.
    5. Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.

    ************************************************** *****

This week's topic is: Martial Arts.

Anything related to the world of martial arts- dojos, pads, suits, swords, throwing stars, batons, etc, etc.

    Time Limit - 60 minutes.

    Deadline: Wed. 28th September 2011. 22:00 G.M.T.

    Thanks for the great topic.

I have a technical question regarding the speed challenge. I have been assuming that rigging with bones is not included in the hour limit, since it is stricting a Layout issue. But what is the judgment on weight mapping and morph mapping? Are these included or excluded from the hour limit?

    Sai

    Hey,

Here is my humble entry, a sai. They normally come in pairs, I know . Modeling about 30 mins, surfacing/rendering about 40 mins.

    Greetings,

Ugh end of the month - I thought it was getting darker. At least I can sate my growing angst by creating more stabby things

    Nice one XswampyX!

    Cool Sai COBRAsoft

@Loregrant-it can be very satisfying. Your last stabby thing set quite a high standard.
@Rabbitpenny-rigging, mapping etc are excluded. I only count modelling the mesh itself.

XswampyX, O.M.G. - I am getting flashbacks! Valerie Leon - what an effect she had on young men in the day.

Its a Helm, gotta protect your head - unlike it's past owner.

Not too happy with this one, but not bad for 10 minutes. Render was steep with the HV though. It'd be a waste not to post it, so here it is.

Iain: lamest? Some of these had 2 sharp points at the ends so you could stab or cut someone as well. I've seen a live presentation of these and in the right hands they could do a lot of damage.

And euhm... Look to Kitana in Mortal Kombat 9... She'll show you how dangerous these things are .

    Modeling: 5 minutes...

A bit of a provocative submission (not about the flag. By the way sorry if any japanese gets ofended by that it was the first thing it came to my mind, no pun intended), because I somehow think these challanges should not be called of "Modeling" because sometimes actual modeling as little to do with the impact that submissions produce.
When one sees the wires many times it's a bit disapointing to see how little modeling it takes. Though I must admit it's mostly great to know how to spare in one side, and push it in other to obtain great results with less effort.

Anyway in an actual modeling challances the wire and the render should be the same. You would probably texture only with something like Occlusion, Curvatures, Bump, Specular tomake the mesh become more vivid with shallow detailing. No color, no normal or displacement, no montage. The mesh would have to talk for itself.
I don't have nothing against good texturing, light and scene setup (we've all been learning a alot), it's just anyone who wants to apply it's time to actual modeling it's in a stretch and can't produce in 60 minutes what someone else can in 60 + time texturing with material presets and textures, lightning, textured enviorment, etc.

So I would call this one... speed preety render/bring it to life challange

(runs and hides behind cover...)(raises a flag saying: nice submissions guys...)

Phew - 58 minutes There was a lot more detail i wanted to add, but I didn't want to go over my time limit. I'm just re-using my old ground plane object from last week's entry. I need to come back later and properly texture this, but right now i need to take a break :P here's a couple of wireframes
