Thread: Manga Studio EX4 on sale for $99

  1. #16
There's a comparison chart between Debut and EX here: http://manga.smithmicro.com/debut_vs_ex.html Mostly, the good stuff is in EX. I'm pretty sure the credit card thing for trial versions is something they have always done. I have a feeling they do it on Poser trials too.

If you buy, I would also recommend reading the installation guide before hand. It's been a while since I installed it, but the process is a little convoluted when it comes to the tone and extras (see pdf at the bottom of this page: http://manga.smithmicro.com/d_tutorials.html ). Also, I don't know which version of the install you get after purchase, but there have been a few updates since the original version that are worth installing (you need your serial number in order to get them).

can you paint with tones so paint the fill with a brush or just tip to fill a selected area?

...i quite like the tone brush found on the nintendo ds flipnote app for example and have yet to find a pc app that can do the same ...the flipnote app only has a few tones to choose from and the res of flip note is TINY!

    HA...just answered my own question!

BTW, OpenCanvas 5 is another interesting paint program. It's not a comics program but it's designed specifically around the 'japanese' style of comic art and illustration. OpenCanvas started out as a free open source app, but it's been commercial for a few years now. I like this program but to be honest haven't really used it much yet. One interesting feature is the ability to playback a drawing session, much like Colors! on the DS. In fact, you can view a lot OC artist sessions at their user gallery just like you can with Colors!. The program also has a really nice on-screen widget, similar to the one in ArtRage but not as huge; in other words, its size is a bit more Tablet PC friendly.

For the most part though, you can do a lot of what OC does using Photoshop, at least that seemed the case with the previous release. I did get an upgrade a few months back but still haven't had a chance to use it and see what's really new in the latest version. I'll try to post more info about in the forums when I get around to it.

BTW, you can still download the free version but it's pretty old and dated compared to the current commecial app. Just do a search for 'OpenCanvas English version'.

Just downloaded a free demo of the lates version from Softpedia. It says the demo is save disabled, (which it is from the File menu), but if you close the window it asks you if you want to save and you can.
I really wasn't thinking about buying new software but whilst playing with Manga Studio I am enjoying its features.

I didn't realise you can import Lightwave object files directly and manipulate them in the program. It produces very clean rendered edges. It says importing 3D modelswork well as sketches for inking over but the line produced automatically is pretty decent. Shame you can't use a layer effects like Screen or Overlay to superimpose over tonal work.

Do I really need this program?...hmmn... could come in handy for story boarding, children's book layouts etc...

There's a .pdf or webpage somewhere with specific instructions. I'll look for it and send you the link. FWIW, you can point MS to your materials directory later so I wouldn't sweat it.

Edit: Nevermind! banjaxedmdt beat me to it.

so, picked up manga studio yesterday, it's a 2d drawing app specially designed for comic art/graphic novel...but also imports 3d models onto the page and rasterises them with lines and tones with it's inbuilt renderer [non destructive...you can open the 3d layer and adjust at anytime]

with my somewhat limited drawing skills i think this might be quite useful !
gives it that 50's technical drawing look too!

just installed...so long way to go before i feel upto showing something of my own...but here's a sample page i've opened up..in one of my screen grabs you can see the lightwave scooter model i'm repositioning...pretty cool idea and it's a live effect...you can re edit the model placement any time and also the render style....in the final page they drew shading ontop and added hilights as well as the drawn character riding the bike.

I am a leaf on the wind...

They really should sort out a better install system for the next version.
