    Very nice. Thanks for posting.

The Multiplane Camera is on display at the Walt Disney museum in San Francisco for those who want a glimpse in person.

    Trivia:
Invented by Ub Iwerks. He left the company for a while and invented a horizontal version in his garage for use in his startup company.

Also, according the the special I saw on A&E he was actually the first one to draw Mickey Mouse.

I saw that special and was just floored by this guy I had never even heard of.

What a great invention - Photoshop / After Effects layers before their time.

I believe Walt Disney left Kansas City, after having already drawn some rough drafts of Mickey, but I'm not sure he was aware of its name yet. Can't remember.

Again according to the A&E documentary Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks were friends and partners since school.

They started a company and made a series of cartoons for a theater chain featuring Oswald Rabbit.

When the theater owner decided he didn't need anymore, he stopped production, but he retained the rights not Disney.

Now I don't know who came up with Oswald. You can see in the image above however that most of the work for Mickey Mouse was really already there. The shorts, the black and white markings. It doesn't seem all that big of a trip to get from A to B, in turning Oswald Rabbit into Mickey Mouse.

It was pretty much change the ears and give him a long tail instead of a fluffy one.

Wow, synchronicity, I'm currently reading "The Illusion of Life".

FWIW, the Disney crew built a horizontal multiplane for the final, "Ave Maria" portion of "Fantasia". Iwerks was probably still working there when they did that (someone else can look it up). Iwerks probably designed that one too.

Those dudes were awesome: "Steamboat Willy" to "Fantasia" in 12 years. Amazing.

::watches video:: Ohh, that's just EXCELLENT! Thanks for the link. Walt, what a communicator.
