Well, I guess I am right next to my laptop. And it only fires up when I'm really hammering it in After Effects or something... So not all the time...

Ask your dealer. There are undoubtedly machines out there NIB that still have the original fan. Check with your dealer and have him check the fan before shipping it to you.

My 850 is very loud as well. My dealer did say something about a quiet fan being available but I have not followed up on that. So now I know when the 850 is on for sure. Would be impossible do have it anywhere nead an open microphone at this point.

Get the new fan. It will blow you away... Or rather it won't blow you away any more...

One thing is for sure: this thread has generated a lot of noise. It's a good thing Newtek listened, otherwise users might have fanned the flames even more, even resorting to the use of blades.

Oh well, we've had some time to cool down since it first became an issue. I'm not real sure what all the fuss was about. A lot of the reasoning seemed circular to me.

I'm trying to determine if the the fan in my 850 is the old or new fan. (Attached is a picture of it) I don't see any "Green Glow" around it at all, and nothing shines through the front of the case.

Thanks for indulging me one more time on this question...

Thanks - makes me feel a lot better knowing it can be quieter.

I'll ask to get this updated...

John, I take that back. It may be the old fan. NewTek has been constantly improving the hardware in the machine. I've just completed an install and I see various hardware used in the same model.

There is a quiet fan that looks like the old fan. The lack of noise might also be due to what I note as a speed controller. Not sure if that's the feature of a different motherboard or a speed controller daughter card. There are quieter PSUs out there in some versions as well.

One of the machines I just encountered recently was really quiet all around. It was pleasantly silent.
