This is the final outcome. ( Partigons would be much better )

That is why it came all weird when I tried!
To change the size I tried Displacement but it's not working yet. It might require the partigon to be at least a cube so I can change the size based on the normals and in relation to particles age.

    Well actually...
You can enter a negative value (try 10 pixels for starter) into the particle size in the object properties and partigons will turn into nicely shaded spheres...
Unfortunately, the size of these spheres is still in pixels and not in meters, or inches, etc.

you can blur the effect in post though...
(of course, render it separately, then combine in post)

Guess we'd need to use DPInstance or HDInstance to clone real geometry... which remembers me that I only tried Denis' Instancer once or twice several months back.
And also... I seriously have to stop experimenting the next 2 weeks - deadline looming.

Well, many thanks for that partigon experiment!
For some reason I always skipped it, but your test sure revived interest. I know the feeling, my test vs production work hours are bit a skewed sometimes as well.

    Thanks for sharing though!

    Hi erikals,

Thanks for the advice but unfortunately I don't have any video compositing software. I know eventually I will have to make the step with either:
Fusion, Nuke or After Effects (AE is the one I am leaning towards).

If there is one I may have over looked please let me know.

I haven't done enough animation to warrant spending the cash as yet.

Fine tuned the original test and attempted another though.

Laticis, If no one has suggested it yet, take a long look at Blender 2.58. I has a non-linear video editor environment and a compositor work flow, with many tutorials, and the compositor is node based and growing in strength. It cost nothing but your time and many good examples of it being used are available.

Excellent, I tried Blender about 4 years ago but could never get past the UI, maybe time to try again.

...will download right away and check it out tonight.

    Thanks for the tip
