    Modelling the Bevel on a Nut

    I must have a mental block or over-thinking or both, and I used to have a tut for this, but I am spending way too much time trying to figure how to make the bevel on a nut, like these:

    have you tried "rounder" in point mode? not edge

    I hadn't - thanks for the idea - but it's not giving the right result and the corner rounding is a bit messy.

    I'm thinking that a quad mesh with a weight map might do it, or model one segment then Radial Array it .....

    Don't know - maybe this is one of those that looks simple but isn't ..... it's caught me out anyway

    Recently I've been using LWCAD for any rounding that I need, because it allows you to set varying rounded radii for different edges.

    well, you can try this

    001. start with a cylinder with 6 sides
    002. create a sphere (24 sides) and intersect it with the cylinder
    003. this is what you get
    004. flatten the polygons at the top
    005. delete the side polygons

    006. using the statistics pannel choose the polys with more than 4 vertices and fix them (for subpatch later)
    007. select this edge loop
    008. and extrude and flatten it
    009. delete the tris pole and choose the inner loop and also extrude and flatten it
    010. select this loop and use bandsaw with cuts at 95 and 5%

    011. the loop after bandsaw
    012. do the same to this loop
    012a. the cuts in bandsaw
    013. do a single cut in this loop at the top (with bandsaw at 5% OR 95% it depends)
    014. another single cut in this loop of polys too

    015. hit tab to subpatch it

    you can now mirror it in the y axis to get the final object
    now you must tweak the final shape, but basically it's something like this I guess.

    Yes - that helps alot Zardoz - thank you very much indeed

    Nice and simple and elegant - guessed it would be - just couldn't see it

    And as BigHache says, LWCAD is good for rounding because of the varying radii ability - use it all the time.

    Threaded Library Available

    I used a Blender to LightWave workflow for creating a "library" of threaded objects. And I did post the library for all to use. Actually I posted three versions with a fourth version (with new cotter pins and eyebolts) to be posted if anyone is interested. The contents were created with a combination of LightWave and Blender modeling. Read the thread for specifics. The nuts come with a internal threaded version and without internal threads.

    This is also a place where subd modeling works well... if you don't want a subd model you could always freeze the mesh and then clean it up a bit too. (see last pic)

    I actually use this tutorial. It's very thorough, and is geared toward creating a model that will animate with a corresponding bolt.

    New Revision of Threaded Library Posted

    Its always a great "power" to model anything at all from basic techniques. The postings on this thread should be of great help to all needing threaded stuff/nuts/bolts etc.

    But . . . sometimes . . . in the heat of a deadline . . . its nice to access other work arounds . . . . such as the revised threaded library I posted a few minutes ago:
