    sound only from vt?

    Hi--

I've been working on a small project and noticed I'm no longer hearing any sound through the speakers unless it's played from VT. It's the card that came with my VT2 system years back.

I can open Sound Forge and play, but no sound. I can open VT and play and voila! there it is.

    What gives?

The VT windows audio drivers aren't installed with VT5. Those are bad mojo.

They aren't buggy themselves, so we can't fix it.

The problem is when Windows causes a beep or some other sound before we launch them ourselves. It is then under the control of Windows Explorer so we can't reset values in it when we need to.

Then if anything goes wrong during your show or edit, even restarting VT is not resetting the card. This leads to more problems.

Anyway, that's why they were made optional (if you know where to find them), but I really, really advise against it. It's just not worth it.

Uninstalling them on older versions would make them more stable as well.

You're far better off running a short stereo mini cable from the VT card to the sound card. Cheap and reliable.

Thanks for the replies. This now makes sense why it used to work w/ my VT2.

No other sound card is installed on my PC, but I do have a USB sound card I sometimes use w/ my laptop. Would this cause any problems?

Not as far as I know (we've used them with SpeedEDIT before) but that obviously varies by manufacturer and driver.

    Worth a shot for sure.

    Thanks, John.

I've always been VERY timid to make changes to my editing box ever since my days with the DPS Perception. That card hated just about everything else I installed with it.
