I want to make a video that will have world of warcraft characters in it. To save modeling time, I would like to obtain objects from the game, and put them into lightwave. Is this possible or legal?

I'm not a lawyer, but this sounds like it's skating a fine line with the law. Guess it would depend on what you intended to do with the video.

If you are doing this for a class and will not receive any profit from it I believe under the fair use law you can do this. This allows students and educators to use copy write material, but no profit from this material can be made.

So I believe if it is for a class go for it. But be careful.

Search for Wow Model Viewer or 3D Ripper DX. As the others have said, they should be used for private, educational purposes only.

My memory is fuzzy, but didn't William Vaughn just go through a big battle with legal issues on a short he and his class did over an old Dr. Suess comic?

Yes, be very careful trying to cite fair-use laws...

I think they were just told they couldn't show it, which they didn't.

No big legal battle or anything.

Was gonna make a machinima with 3D - although then it would be an animation and not a machinima - heh.

Anyway, you can get WoW models into Lightwave if you've got the WoW Model viewer and Milkshape 3d.

Pick your pose to export within the WoW Model viewer, then file > export it as a Milkshape 3D format.

Then, open the file up in Milkshape and export it out as a .obj

Import the obj into modeler and you're ready to tweak.

You'll need to merge points and adjust any textures with alpha channels, as they import a bit wonky. But I was able to learn a lot about modeling from my little foray.

Blizzard is pretty cool about machinimas as long as you're not making money - but this was a step beyond - although someone did it here not too long ago - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWgW3ogaV84

Dunno how they got Stormwind exported, they musta had a programmer fix the model viewer, because it'll only export characters, mobs, and weapons.

Anyway, finally working on my own stuff after playing in the sandbox for a while ;)
