View Full Version : Anyone every used Shapeways to create a physical 3d model from LW obj?

This looks rather cool, and the cost is just astonishing (as low as $25 inc shipping, and price is determined by material cost, not complexity)

If I can ever create something 'worthy', it would be great to have a physical model of my LW object on my desk.

Has anyone ever done this?

I saw a few threads 3 years ago where folks had used:

Just keep in mind that something that is only 25$ might be very very small... it's all based on volume of the object. I haven't use any rapid prototyping but I know a few people here have.

Jeffry - They encourage you to make the objects 'thin' and hollow (to minimize cost)

So, they could be a decent size.

They would hopefully be able to detect if the model could hold its own weight and is not too thin.

But, I've never used them, so I'm just guessing.

Would really be cool if they worked at a reasonable cost. Would make some cool 1-of-a-kind Xmas gifts too!

I would think the thickness of the object would be up to them. Since most objects are only a single polygon for a wall. With exceptions of bevels and extrusions.

Silkrooster - I'm not sure what their software would do with a single poly thickness. I would guess they are more geared towards models that are built for the realWorld. Would be a very good question to ask them!

From a post in their forum from a year ago (this may have changed as they improve their software):

we do not have a check in place, at the moment, that can determine if your model is too fragile to ship. We have other checks that check wall thickness, overall thickness etc. But, in some cases a model that passes those still is way too fragile. Thats why people manually check the models, as a last resort.

So it still can happen that a model passes the checks but that we decide to refund your model anyway.
