Put a world co-ordinate tex on a plane's transparency and parent it to camera.

make a morph shifting it into distance, and make it morph away every frame on repeat.

Then render on Photreal blur on 100% and lots of motion blur passes.

Easy to do and good for space stuff.. Playing with nodes gives swirly effects to the (pretend) volumetrics.

Ps.. My render is grainy because I banged it out on low settings, but its quite fast to render.

Actually, I just saw someone else on the forum come up with the same solution. (I didn't copy it honest!)

These 3D procedurals are the kind of thing I like about LW and miss in XSI.

Neat.

Another trick is to parent a volumetric distant light to camera, facing camera. Leave shadows off that light.

Nice effect, it has a spooky look to it that appeals to my sense of the dramatic, you could imagine anything being hidden by the fog or comeing right at you from the swirly shadows.
