Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - And The Winner Is

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

************************************************** *******
Rules:

1: Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modelling times is essential.
How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.

2: Post a render of your model (min 800x600 pixels) in this thread with a wireframe.

3: LightWave should be used for modelling. 3rd party Plug ins are allowed.

4: You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.

5: Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.

**Please mention whether or not you would be happy to share the model.**

Subject - And The Winner Is

AdamAvenali suggested that
"I was actually thinking it would be cool if maybe the next challenge was to model a trophy or something and we could make it into an avatar sized image and if you win you get to put it in your sig or something. i think i saw something like that over on game-artist.net"

And who am I to say no :D

Simplicity and clean lines I think would be the key to this challenge. If it is something to be used in a sig it needs to be easy to read and understand in a fairly small image.

The winning image will also be used as the logo on the Lightwave Speed Modeling Group page (http://www.newtek.com/forums/group.php?groupid=7).

I don't think I should pick a winner for this one. It should be by popular vote.

Time Limit - 60 minutes

Deadline - Wednesday 01 July 2200 GMT

Great idea, Nothing like a cyber-trophy to bring out a little extra effort.

Not so much a trophy as a badge or maybe medal

I actually like the badge better than a normal trophy.

Here's my first try. Maybe I'll try another later.

20 minutes modeling.
1 Hour surfacing.
2 minutes rendering.

Nice work James, A little micro bevel on the edges would really help sell it.

Another quick one.
I went with the perspex block too.

Here's the model modified with slight beveled edges on the nameplate and clear part.

15 minutes added to original modeling time. Total 35 minutes.

I decided to go with the more traditional trophy for this one.
Modeling took about 40 mins and about 30 for texture and rendering.
Great job from everyone so far!!!!!!!

Question:

What's holding the LW Logo in place on your trophy? It seems to be floating. Should have a string or a fine gold or peuter chain letting it dangle.

It is floating! I actually had a chain in there but didn't like the look so I opted for the floating unrealistic logo.:D

Hey all,

My entry was modelled in less than 30 minutes. Since someone can win the challenge more than once, I made a shape that's combinable in different setups (see image with 4 trofees) and cannot fall easily. 1 more thing, at the bottom of the trofee, I've placed a velvet layer, so the reflections are blocked there and the trofee wouldn't make scratches an a surface.

Layout took way too long, but I played too much with the colors and lights :)

Greetings,
Sigurd

Looks like I'm not going to have time to get something in this week. Is the plan to do a group vote on these?

stevmjon

why not keep all entries, and let the weekly winner decide which one they want.

keep up the good work.

I like the idea of the wordless trophy.
I tried to get a sensation of speed in this one.

Nice work so far guys:thumbsup:
There is still around 5 hours to go if anyone feels like trying for another one.

I think its best to go with a vote on a winner on this challenge.

Not at all, I had no idea. Cheers mate:hey:

I will add a poll once the deadline for entries has passed.

Any thoughts on how long we should give the voting?

AdamAvenali
07-01-2009, 02:18 PM
we need a vote to see how long to keep the vote open :D

haha nah, i would say a week would be a fair amount of time. i would propose the voting stay open until 08 July 2200 GMT

I felt compelled to participate due to the alarming lack of lens flares in this contest :P

I call this one, the "rocketskate chisel."
I was wondering if I should have just made it all golden. :stumped:

Used the whole 60 minutes. When i saw that there were only two minutes left for the hour, I threw the showlaces away and stuffed in the lame Velcro straps.

Texturing and rendering about four minutes ^_^;;

Well time is up on entries.
I`ll try adding a poll

I have to agree on the alarming lack of gratuitous Lens Flares, it makes me sad. :D
your "rocketskate chisel." has me impressed and confused

Winner cup

It's possible to drink beer out of this one :D

I hoped to add more details, but I had to go out for half an hour and the time limit for this has been reached already.

R. Feeney, thanks to wait for me. I'm sorry the quality is not better and there are no starfilters in the final render.

R.Feeney

No problem

The poll has been added.
Please vote.
I forgot to add a closing date. it has to finish before next Wednesday.
So next Tuesday at 2200 GMT will be the cut off point.
Good luck guys.

Let me be the first to vote. I've voted for R. Feeney's wordless trophy. Simple, elegant and clear. I wanted to vote also for my own multi trophy, but R. Feeney's is just better :)

Couldn't even vote for my own on this one. Like I said before I totally voted for the wordless trophy! In the spirit of R.Feeney........Cheers!

so should we post the image in a fixed size for use in sigs? or should we allow people to download and scale as they feel the need? is the award retroactive or only applied to future victories? :D

R.Feeney
07-08-2009, 01:11 PM
There is a question, does this forum even support images in sigs?

AdamAvenali
07-08-2009, 01:20 PM
hmm i tried the code and it seems to come up as a link. i thought i saw some people around here doing it though.

i guess if that is something that newtek cannot change, then we could request that they make it into a smiley because i see they have custom smiley's in there.

AdamAvenali
07-08-2009, 01:25 PM
i just found the one i was thinking about. Matt is doing it somehow, though it is a link so that may be the difference. we could have it link to the speed modeling social group.

There is an option at the bottom of the sid edit page to insert an image.
I think I will make the final version smaller than this though. :D

haha it looks good. maybe consider putting it on the same bg color as the forum as well?

Make it a transparent GIF, there are not so many colours in it, so, it could work well.

i was thinking something like this, but you did win Feeney, so whatever you decide is the way it will be
