Is it possible to play a quicktime mov of someone dancing in Layout, so that a character could be animated frame by frame to follow the moves?

Import the Quicktime under the image editor. As long as you have the Quicktime codec installed in your I/O options (Input Output).
Set the drop down to ANIMATON instead of STILL.
It will tell you running time in frames.
Set your timeline sequence to match the number of frames.
Go to the COMPOSITE option on your WINDOWS drop down menu and select the Quicktime as your background.
Now hit D to get to your display options and in the bottom section is the box to "show preview" where it will show your quicktime in the background.

Hope this helps.

Just like to add in something here, you have to be using the 32 bit version of LightWave, since apple has yet to make a 64 bit version of Quicktime.
