1 - I believe if you own a copy of LightWave you have access to the .lwo importer. Check your downloads section for:
LightWave Rendition™ For Adobe® Photoshop® LightWave Object Importer
This will allow you to import an .lwo into Photoshop without buying Rendition.

2 - On the Rendition product page (http://www.newtek.com/rendition/) it states that it's for Photoshop CS3 Extended. I wouldn't assume it works with CS4 Extended unless somebody says it does. It may work just fine, it may not... anyone out there know?

3 - If you want to render 3D objects inside of Photoshop you need Rendition. However, if you already own LightWave I see little use for it. LightWave comes with its own great little rendering plugin called Layout which is superior to Rendition in loads of ways, it just operates outside of Photoshop.

If you like working inside of Photoshop and prefer to avoid messing around with Layout, maybe Rendition is for you. Of all of the folks I know using LightWave, none have expressed a need for what Rendition does.
