View Full Version : Warning: Different Voltages in Newer PCI Slots

Just when you think you know just about everything, some new information comes along and slaps you on the side of the head ;-).
I have an older VT[2] card, circa 2000. I decided to upgrade to VT[5]. I've done it for a couple of customers, with older VT cards in new computers, no problem.
So I buy an off-the shelf HP workstation, with an available PCI slot. (I know PCI-E is a different kind of slot). The VT wouldn't boot up, and NewTek Tech support confirmed that my card needs a 5 Volt PCI slot. And HP confirms that the PC's PCI slots were not adjustable from the 3.something voltage.
Apparently this change happened years ago, but I guess I missed the bulletin.
Anyway, just an FYI for anybody else upgrading an older VT. Make sure your new motherboard has at least one 5 volt PCI slot.
