I have a high performance aircraft that is flying along a path. I want to create an exhaust flame/after burner like the after burner from a F-4 fighter on full military power.

Smoke is a bonus effect.

Where could I learn how to do this effect?

here´s a somewhat older link and using older plugins, but you can certainly use native particles and hypervoxels.

you could also try out volumetric lights and parent those to the engine and
play around with different procedural textures.

distorted air could be done by using refraction on particle hv surfaces
or on to geometry.

there´s also a commercial plugin from worley called taft wich has a
tool called heatwave for distortions.
