I need to model the hourglass nebula. I have not been having much success making it resemble the photo. It does need to have true 3D properties as a fly-around is needed. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

How long would it take to fly around that puppy ?? :-)

I guess that would depend on how many frames per second and the total number of frame in this animation. Just kidding-interesting thought though!

maybe you could do it with 2 volumetric spotlights(for the red bits anyway)

I don't know if you make animation to it. but...

I would make a model like a bullet and with weigths to transparence.
I would use displacement map to make move it together with textures movements

I think that works

Valter is right, transparency mapped bullets he said, I say two intersecting cylinders. You can use fractal noise or turbulence to get the spherical looking rough edged glows. Switch on edge transparency for the hell of it and you should be pretty close.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the tips! I'll give them a shot and see what happens.
