This has probably been discussed before, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

A colleague of mine is purchasing LW for his department and he asked me if he could buy 1 copy of LW and 5 extra dongles. Is this something that's allowed? The retailer where he's buying LW sells the dongles separately, so I guess it's implied, but it seems to me like that's a way to avoid having to buy extra seats at full price.

You can download LW for free, but to activate it fully, you need the dongle anyway. Unless he's selling the dongle for less than the price of a disk in a box, it seems Ok to me.

You pay for a license to use the software. The dongle is for copy-protection. Each license of lightwave requires a dongle to work.

The retailer or you may be confusing the books and disk set with the license.
You can buy either a download version or a version that includes books and discs.
Both of those versions come with a dongle.
