Hi,
I've been asked to mock-up a street scene (it's for a local non-profit group) to help them with their planing for some construction (parking lot etc.)

It's something I do as a favour to them (so no pay).

What I need are a couple of cars and a few trees.

What's your recommendation for sites to visit ? Since I'm not getting any money for this, I want to avoid paying much of anything for this stuff. I'll pay if there's no choice, but even then, I want to keep the cost as low as possible / sensible.

Doesn't need to be top-notch stuff, since it's not used for any commercial work that's going to be published.

Any pointers would be appreciated !

Cheers,
Andreas

Try here for cars etc. Don't know of any for trees. Perhaps try turbo squid I think they still have various free models.

Seems to me the XFrog demo (http://www.xfrogdownloads.com/greenwebNew/products/productStart.htm) comes with a few good trees that can be exported as LWO with all the materials intact, i.e., textures and transparencies.
I can't remember what kind of content the demo comes with, but I do know it's fully functional for 30 days and you might find some user uploaded trees for free you could use. They also sell libraries of really nice premade trees and plants.
Might want to check it out.

Unfortunately, many of the SketchUp models aren't really worth the bother. I downloaded a few, and ended up just building it myself. There are a few expert modellers though, look for the 5 star ratings.

They are some nice models. I found them after I build the Dodge Challenger and the Ford Torino, and their models seem pretty accurate too.

agreed. for references to speed up your own modeling though, gotta admit they're handy. might be what acocq is llooking to do, you never know.

Be careful, I was using one as a reference for the London Tower Bridge, only to discover the models proportions were wrong. The author had made the towers square when view from the top, they are actually rectangular.

Weve used 3d warehouse alot and moreso as time goes on. many of the models are pretty good and woth the time to poke around. Many can be easily tweaked and many are suitable for filling in environments with "stuff". Its a great resource thats saved us tons of time and effort allowing us to focus more on making shots look good. :)

Sometimes the images they use for maps are atrocious! But there are some good finds there, like I said, look for the 5 star ones, or just download a whole bunch and browse through them.

Can you tell I am spending most of today waiting for hard FX to finish calculating?

I rarely use the image maps supplied with the 3d warehouse stuff unless the objects will be far away, occluded etc. I usually end up retexturing or tweaking the models somewhat.

Wow guys ... thank you so much for your help ...

The free car models are great and some of the tree stuff is darn nice.

I also exported some trees from Vue5 (I'd forgotten that I got that way back when ... *embarassed*) - look nice, but a bit on the huge side (num of polys).

In any event ... I'm nearly finished and although from an artistic point, it's not much, it's one of only three "projects" I've ever done since I got LW (in 2003 - I'm just a hobby user, no intention to do anything professional with it [lack of skill & time]).

Thanks again !

Cheers,
Andreas
