Fprime From Worley, Fryrender from Feversoft, Maxwell from Next Limit, VirtualRender from trueart and Kray. There may be others I've forgotten.

Hi there,

i've got a question regarding FPRIME: Wikipedia writes "Although currently the native Lightwave Engine (9.5+) is at a par in regard to speed, the workflow for texturing and lighting using FPrime is still unrivaled."

What does that mean, is there no need to buy FPRIME if i upgrade to LW9.6?

Thanks,
Tobias

Most definitely Kray. ;)

I have none of the external renderers, but based on what I've seen so far I would pick Kray too. If I were buying, that is.
It appears to be particularly good for architectural renders.

Hmmm........almost. Quality is missing from your equation.
FPrime renders Monte Carlo radiosity just slower (on average) than LW's interpolated Monte Carlo.
The crucial word there is interpolated.

The LW radiosity solutions have been improved so much that interpolated versions of Monte Carlo and Final Gather are sometimes superior to FPrime's non-interpolated but they lack shadow contact and are prone to blotchy errors/light leaks.

Kray on the other hand, seems both faster and capable of better quality than either. You just don't get the interactive element that has become indispensable since FPrime came along.

I'm going to buy LW 9.6 and well, i can get the FPRIME plugin for 150 bucks, should i go for it?
I mean, is FPRIME a must have as it was "years ago" or has it become obsolete?

What kind of work do you do?

For arch viz, I couldn't go back to rendering, tweaking textures and/or lighting then rendering again.
It's just so much easier to have fprime running all the time.

I've heard current FPrime version doesn't support 9.6 new features regarding surfacing, and maybe new light types - which is why I'm still waiting for an update before I ever consider buying it

I've been lurking on Worley's website to see any announcement, but nothing yet - All I know is that worley has been working closely with NT during the 9.5/9.6 beta (Worley has been mentioned on several occasions in the update reports ) - so an update is being developed for sure, the question now is why does it take so long and most importantly when will it be released ? a video showing hypervoxels in the previewer has been posted a while ago, but there's no mention of that on his website.

One of the features that interests me the most is the near realtime previewer, but I want it to work with all LW features, which is not the case at the moment, so I guess I'll have to wait

[troll mode on]OOooooh I can see the future ... It's a bit blurry... I see ... I see one particular dev whose products has been listed here is going jump in this thread and post links to his products ![troll mode off]

I use fprime with 9.6. In fact I have used it to varying extents on every project since I got it.

It is limited due to LW's architecture and constantly evolving nature. It always has been and to be honest I rarely use it for rendering now but it is an absolute joy to have and has paid for itself in time saved a hundred times over.
