hello all, m building a new system, and wat to choose my vga, but dunno what to choose btw 9800 gtx+ and gtx 285 since i dnt know the difference for the 3d and cad work.

xfx 9800 gtx+ 512 mb 256 bit:

Core clock: 785MHz
Stream Processors: 128
Memory Clock: 2340MHz
DirectX: DirectX 10
OpenGL: OpenGL 2.1

OR

EVGA GTX 285 SC Edition 1GB 512 bit

Core clock: 675MHz (vs. 648Mhz standard)
Stream Processors: 240 processing cores
Memory Clock: 2538MHz
DirectX: DirectX 10
OpenGL: OpenGL 2.1

OR

EVGA GeForce GTX 285 SSC Edition 1GB 512 bit

Core clock: 702MHz (vs. 648Mhz standard)
Stream Processors: 240 processing cores
Memory Clock: 2646MHz
DirectX: DirectX 10
OpenGL: OpenGL 2.1

OR

XFX GeForce GTX 295 1792MB 896 (448 x 2)-

Core clock: 576MHz
Stream Processors: 480 (240 x 2) processing cores
Memory Clock: 2000MHz
DirectX: DirectX 10
OpenGL: OpenGL 2.1

I see that price is going higher for higher series and for higher stream processors, even if it have less core and memory clock, so the question is what do we need, more streaming or more memory????

the choice should be for CAD and 3d operation, speciallyt autocad, photoshop and lightwave, hope that someone can shed the light on how GTX 200 series may be better for this type of use over 9 series

P.S.: could someone know why GTX 280 have higher price than GTX 285

Good lord! GTX 285 hands down! You roughly tell how good a card is by it's price. Also, go to anandtech.com and look at benchmarks. The 9800GTX is a little less potent than the GTX 260.

10x for ur pass matt, surelyt i dnt evaluate up to the price, i checked benchmarks, and reviews, but i just asked since 285 is newer and beat 280, why still 280 is marked higher in price than 285m and since series 9 get closer in core and memory clock to gtx 200 series.

the question is that, what does streaming process benefit the cad, photoshop and 3d application, is it good for them and makes the difference or is it just good and do better job for games???
is it better to look what card hace higher core and memory clock or to look for higher streaming core?

I can't tell you how that stuff will affect Photoshop and such, but i can tell you it won't actually make a difference with (current) LightWave. But it will play games fast. If you have the budget, get the faster card. If all you are worried about is LightWave performance, get the cheaper card and buy a faster processor.

GTX 280 is manufactured in a 65nm process. The GTX 285 is the redesign for the new 55nm process. Since the transistors in the GTX280 are larger, it uses more silicon.
