Hey all,

so I just started reading about the new DSi and was just wondering what peoples thoughts are on them. I love my DS (it's the original kinda big and clunky one haha see attached) and was just wondering which features might sell people on getting a new one. I was never really a big fan of the DS Lite because I had a hard time holding it and the bigger one always felt better, but I guess the new DSi has a camera and mp3 capabilities and something about WiFi.

Thanks,
Adam

dsi looksinteresting...i have the first gen DS

new dsi lacks ability to use gameby advance carts

dsi has 2 cameras and also a SD card slot to play music from
dsi also has 2d animation app also...THAT's the thing i'm looking toward mostly.

dsi will not work with R4 cards i think no homebrew....for now at least...

yeah i love the first gen's. they just fit my hands better and i dont feel like i'm going to break it (unlike the lite's).

i was unaware of the 2d animation. could be pretty cool if it is what i'm imagining haha

i was really mostly interested in the Wifi stuff because i was looking into getting an iPod touch for that reason alone, but the article i read mentioned it will use it's own Nintendo "browser" which makes me nervous that it is going to be like a mobile cell phone browser.

the browser is the same opera based one they sell as a cart...ie don't bother!

looking at the specs i'd proabably stay with what i have [DS first gen] and the R4 cart with colors and animatee as well as being able to play mp3's...and that also has removable storage [micro sd]

being ale to draw and also do 2d animation 'anywhere' is quite neat.

doing DSi i'd loase all that as there's no home brew...
as for a camera..i have one on my fisrt gen sony PSP that also has 4gig removable cards and can record video as well as stills...

note also the battery life on the DSi is MUCH less than a ds lite

if anything i'd add a ipod touch if i found enough 'apps' that would warrant the cost.

I am not a fan of the DS, I stick with PSP, but I did have to laugh when I saw the DSi because it looks nothing like my DS2 mock-up (here (http://gizmodo.com/339601/nintendo-ds-2-the-3d-mock+up-makes-us-drool-even-more) and here (http://gear.ign.com/articles/907/907463p1.html)). Of course it's not really a true sequel, so there's still hope.

yeah i was torn when it came time to buy, though i kind of always knew that i would be going with the DS just purely because i have been with nintendo hand-helds from the beginning.

and it was a bonus when they started releasing all the original final fantasy games haha they're my addiction

the psp is okay, i have one as a well as a DS but the psp lacks decent games and really needs a touch screen of some sort..maybe the 3rd gen version of the psp will finally do it.

i play games on my ds as well as write music with the korg synth and create 2d art with colors plus 2d animation with animatee...

my psp> play music and use the camera..
my main use it to put 3d training videos on the psp's memory cards and watch them whilst traveling.

i can't find a single game that's worth playing on the psp...:hey:

Even though the "air" about the R4 and similar cards are that they are Piracy Devices (and to be sure I'm guilty of having a few ROMs on mine), the DSi currently has new encyrption to break these cards (this will change of course) and the WONDERFUL HOMEBREW scene will not work on DSi until they change that.

COLORS! is a piece of genius.

I'm waiting for Blender for DS heh heh

so basically the R4 is a card that has a microSD in it that you can load up with things like Colors! and ROMS? i cant believe i havent heard of this before haha

yep...i have the R4 card and have installed colors and animatee on it
you can also play mp3's... nintendo should have done a 'home brew' from the beginning...i think their idea of the nintendo app store for dsi will address some of those needs all depends on how many people develop apps for it on their dsi app store...

in the meantime i'll keep my first gen DS:thumbsup:

micro sd card is separate...i have a 2gb card, so you can have as many as you need...

Funny, I say the same thing about the DS. I had both and couldn't find anything fun for my DS so I sold it on eBay.

well i do like mario kart [ds] and f zero [gameboy advance]...

it's quite weird how the stuff i use my 2 portable consoles is more often than not nothing to do with games!

DS>
korg DS10 synth
colors
animatee
music player
health coach
mario kart
fzero

psp>
music player
video player
psp camera [video and stills]
...no games at all!

Sounds like how I use my iPhone for everything else more than phone calls. Then again, it's designed for that.

yeah an ipod touch looks pretty tempting, more so than a dsi currently for me.

I like this one though i think its a good choice

Yep, I'm thinking of buying one of those.
I already have a 1st gen DS (along with PSP and GP2X, GBA Micro and others) and the next handhelds for me will be DSi and Pandora (which I'm really looking forward to.)

BTW if anyone is looking at an iPhone or Touch supposedly Apple will be announcing OS 3.0 on the 17th. Rumor has it it may include a whole new interface and the app store might have a premium section so you don't have to wade through a million $1 apps to get to the fancier ones.

Pandora ?

Yep, that is the prototype. Pandora's tech specs are quite impressive and if there will form a similar active developer community as with GP2X and previous GP32, there will probably also be nice software and emulators to play with... :)

odd choice of cpu, thought they would have gone with intel atom...still i suspect the ARM cpu will run longer than the samsung's netbook 7 hours...10hrs for the ARM is good but i'd sooner have a intel chip!

$330 is ALOT...i can get a acer apire one netbook intel atom for £142 in vat from amazon

or this for £134

still, we're going of topic!

oh i think at this point the topic can go wherever it needs to haha this whole R4 card thing has pulled me away from wanting the DSi and unlocking the full potential of my current first gen DS haha

yeah R4 is ace...just to get colors and animatee

no doubt three will be a new version for dsi...which i'll wait for before getting a dsi unless something amazing happens from nintendo re software updates
