View Full Version : Clothfx disappearing?

I'm trying to do a loin cloth on a character. I ran some tests of a simple subpatched cloth on a lump with two legs before, and everything went fine with the cloth parented to the legs. Now that I have my real character and cloth finished, whenever I parent the cloth to the character and move him around to get the cloth flowing, the cloth instantly disappears after frame 0 when I calculate. I have a fix point set, everything I had before, am I doing something wrong?

1st you don't actually have to parent the cloth to the character. Just select, "use bones from" in the Bones property panel for the cloth object. In fact if you don't select "Use bones from" the fixed points will remain in place.

The reason the cloth is disappearing is for several possible reasons but all because likely the calculation is just too much data and you are getting overload. Turn off subpatches and see if that fixes it. You will get better results with a subdivided cloth and no subpatch. Put your subdivision order to last if the cloth object has subpatches applied. The cloth will then be calculated on the base mesh which is what you want because that is the data that is saved with a mdd anyway and it gives best results. After you save an mdd file (file tab) then you can apply the subpaches and switch the subdivision order to first again. This will smooth things out without ruining the cloth simulation. So the base mesh needs to be dense.

I had the disappearing cloth problem scores of times and it was usually just overload of data or I forgot and had subdivision order to first or something with a dense mesh. The cloth plugin is not perfect, it will fail from time to time and this is one of those things.

Here are a few resources on cloth:

http://www.newtek.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92174&highlight=cloth

http://www.newtek.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92820&highlight=cloth

Both are threads that have some data from my tests. In the second one is a link to the animation I did and was talked about in the first thread.

And prior to that just before I realized there was no way around high density I wrote something here:

Then I have some cloth tests documented (Cloth Test Results) and files to match. They may not all work as I have not loaded each one and tested them recently but the scene files in the tests folder should look for objects you'll find in the Cloth folder.

Thanks a bunch, I reduced my character to a proxy and subdivided the actual cloth, reset all my settings and now it's working. The only thing that seems to freak it out is turning stretch limit to 1%, instead of anything else. Weird. I'm going to look through the rest of the information you posted as well and go through those test scenes to see if I can improve mine, as I'm pretty new to clothfx. Thanks for all the info!

No problem. Yeah setting a low stretch limit will add calc time and that can also be a factor that will make it wig-out.

Cloth is not well documented. Just people on the board here like Dirk in that thread I gave you, who inspired me during all of my testing.

Good luck with it!
