View Full Version : Diplacement question?

:lwicon:I'm using photoshop to create some diplacement maps. Lots of gradients. When I use them in lightwave I get teribble stair stepping even though the gradient looks smooth. Has anyone else had this problem and how could I fix it? I'm trying to make a detailed lunar surface and the walls of the craters and hills look like mayan stepped pyramids. I have tried blurring them but it doesn't work.

You may need to switch to a different color mode. The standard RGB color mode is 8-bits per channel (red, green, blue) which works out to 256 shades of grey so if you scale the depth up too high, you'll see the differences between shades as stair steps.

If you use the 16-bit color mode (I think that's the name... I don't have PS in front of me now) you should get a smoother displacement in LW.

Thanks! I'll try it and let you know how it worked out.
