Newbie question - trying to control the deformation of a figure when I move bones. Is a displacement map what I need? Is there a tutorial?

Weight maps is what most people use to control bone deformations. You will also see the weight map property under the bones property panel. Because of the Layout/Model split in Lightwave, the process can be time consuming. The best method is for the bones to share weight maps by body part, ie: right leg, left leg, torso, head, etc.

Some people do not use weight maps, but use a method called "hold bones". This creates a large number of bones, so these rigs tend to use null objects as the "strings to the puppet". Another method for hold bones is to hide the hold bones, or color them darker, using the scene editor before animating .

Awesome. Thanks. I'm going to try the weight maps.
