View Full Version : Engraving a headstone using..

Hey i have just been testing out "engraving" on a headstone

I'm hoping to do this just by using a bump map but is not giving me the right results.

For engraving the text i am now going to bevel some text and boolean subtract from the headstone itself. (unless you know a nicer way)

But i am looking for details and engraving such as http://www.lucychurchill.com/Bowden_headstone.jpg
i have tried coping the lamb greyscaling in photoshop and using it as the bump map but i am not getting enough depth in the "stone"

Any tips would be great!

Thank you, Joe

You could use fertilizer plugin in reverse to reveal letters already engraved. It's a fantastic plugin, 32bit only I think, one reason I always have a 32bit version of LW installed. You can find the link at the top of this page by Mark Dunakin:

You could get the picture of the grave stone and use it as a displacement map. I dont know if it will work, worth a try.

Oops sorry - I thought you were trying to animate the engraving!

For just the engraving of the text I'd go with your boolean idea, but the image I'd probably model with sub-Ds and textured up if you wanted the real 3D look.

 good idea

I was hoping not to have too much geometry in the scene as im making an entire graveyard.

i'll try the displacement and sub out tomorrow and see how i get on. Thank you!

Skywalker couldn't help but make this you can use it as your avatar if you like it. compression was anoying though lol

if you have photoshop you can use this plugin to take your bump map and turn it into a normal map. should give you better results than a bump and not add more geometry with a boolean.
