What do you guys use to create QTVR object movies? Is there anything free out there that does a good job?

You might already be aware of this but... if your objects are 3D based then you could use the QTVR Object exporter built into LightWave (Render Globals/Output/Animation Type - choose Quicktime VR Object) I haven't been using it for ages but it was quite useful back in 2000 or so. There isn't much control over the outcome, but for simple object spinning it does a good job.

Setting up the scene might give you a headache though.

For other than 3D objects I don't know what to use. Apple had their own software for creating QTVR movies long ago, maybe they still do...

Yeah I tried the built in one and couldn't get it to work. Any guides or tutorials out there?

Not free though but nice. For the rendering one should write a small script that places the camera, otherwise you have endless work placing the camera manual on each frame.

Do you have to have a codec to be able to view them in quicktime?

No....they are just like a normal quicktime movie, with an extra tag or something that tells quicktime how to play/display them.

However..you do need quicktime to view them.

Well I can't view them, I have the latest version of quicktime pro and it just comes up with a big question mark when I try to watch them.

Mmmmm....can you view any of the examples here:

http://stream.uen.org/medsol/digvid/html/sampler_qtvr_movies.html

The movies from that page work for me, I even saved one to my computer and opened it in QT player.

Your movies might be the problem, either they have become corrupted or it's something else.

Btw I tried this in XP on my MacBook.

Nope I either get the question mark or a blank black bar.

I had a look and found this:

You aren't using the XP 64bit version are you, looks like QT might not work well with XP 64bit.

Ps....I'm running XP 32bit.

Yes I am actually. That kind of makes sense. I'll try it on my laptop when I get home from work and see how that goes. Thanks.

QT doesn't work right on xp x64. But if you encode them on your machine with LW as qtvr, a 32bit qt installation can play it.
So x64 can encode it but can't read it's own qtvr files. There's a tutorial in the lw manual that shows what you have to do (in short, parent the cam to a tilt and to a heading null, then apply a stepped keyframe for each one, finally set each channel to offset repeat).
