Anybody know how to linearize/un-gamma a bitmap or, for that matter, create a linear bitmap?

Are you referring to taking a smoothed out image and converting it into an image with banding like you would get from topological maps? If that's the case, I suppose you could try using the 'Posterize' filter in Photoshop.

If not then I'm sure someone else can help out. Just make sure you are clear in exactly what you are trying to achieve.

a brute force approach w/in lightwave is:

F6 for Image Editor

select the offending image

Editing Tab: Gamma, change numerical box to .4545

The best way is to use SG_CCTools, that's what they are made for:thumbsup:

See this tut:http://www.lightwiki.com/SG_CCTools_-_For_Color_Management_and_Linear_Workflows

SG_CCTools also allow you to make color space conversions aside form simply linearizing your image.
