You make a better model than the free version.
When someone needs that extra quality and they need it NOW (meaning they don't have time to make it themselves...or can't make it themselves because they lack the skills) they will pay if it is reasonable.
Reasonable is defined by how much they stand to make by using your model. You can make a unique model that has highly specialized uses and charge through the nose for it, or you can model common items and charge less and make money through volume sales.

Due to the pace of the show I work on we buy a lot of assets or download them off 3d warehouse and convert to LW. We use turbosquid, content paradise, Daz etc. If those dont work then I get to model like a bat out of hell. :)
The biggest problem we run into is that too many models were never designed to be animated, are too dense, too expensive for what you get or suck. :)

also for those who are outside the u.s.a and hate filling in forms to set up accounts for tax etc for turbosquid have a look here for some 'how to ' help

http://boards.fool.co.uk/Message.asp?mid=6005476&sort=recommendations

then you can go and sort out your:-
1.turbosquid account
2.3d exchange account
3.3d studio account
4.3d warehouse account etc....

By creating something people want. If you search for a soccer ball or a common vehicle you'll find a lot of matches.

I've a few models on TS, for some strange reason this is my best seller (http://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/364946), so I've no idea what people want.
