how do I make a layer in my scene truly invisible to the camera.
I have unchecked the box in the scene editor but I still get the reflections and cast shodows from the invisible layer on my other layers when rendered. Im sure Im just missing something somewhere. any I deas?

open the properties panel for that layer. In the render tab in the properties panel you can make it "unseen by rays","unseen by camera","unaffected by fog" check all of those. A bit futhur down the same panel you have "Self shadow", "Cast Shadow" and "receive shadow" uncheck all of those. There you have it.:)

You don't have to check/uncheck everything! If you want an object to cast a shadow but not be visible, that's a legitimate mix up of these features...
