howdy,

so i'm trying to break a complex, hi poly model (part of a castle) into pieces... tried the maya shatter dynamics tool but it's too hipoly - it works fine on cubes or simple objects but my object is too hipoly.

tried dodgy's break apart script and it crashes too... too hipoly.

i used to be able to c4 on even pretty insanely hi poly stuff but it doesn't work anymore.

is there any other plugin that will work with 9.5 that will break fairly hipoly objects into pieces? did a search on flay and got nowhere.

thanks.

There seems to be a beta that works with 9.x, but I haven't tried it myself.

CrackIt is a nice one, I always liked it more than C4.

CrackIt works fine in 9.3.1, I havn't tested it in 9.5 yet but modeler hasn't got much updates so it should work in that as well.

As I thought, CrackIt works just fine in 9.5.x.

yeah i tried crackit... works well for lower poly objects but fails on higher ones....

how many polys are we talking about?

don't have the model with me now but i would guess about 10k?

Crackit works fine here on small intel mac windows setup (only 1gb ram). Doesn't work on OSX for some reason.

I did 35,000 polys, but they were tris, converted from 4500 sub-patches frozen. I set the cracks to a lower number, as higher would crash. But you could take each piece out as separate object and crack and then reassemble.

There seems to be something also called 'MGBreakUpMD.ls' which I have but don't know where I got it. It works on Macintosh, but don't know how it performs on Windows.

ooops, actually i tried mgbreakup which ended up crashing me... also, it only slices according to spherical cross sections so that's less than ideal.

i can't download from that foundation site... stupid fing policy. and i can't download crackit... that site does not work. anyone have any good links to any of the above? thanks.

That's one of Mike (Dodgy) Greens' plugins.

Have you looked on Flay this week?...Stib's Lscripts at the top has 'The Explodinator' (http://www.flay.com/GetDetail.CFM?ID=2444)

Any good?

explodinator looks like it takes apart a model poly by poly... basically very computery looking effect.

ack... man, this is the first time (!!!) that i actually HAD TO resort to maya over lw for geometry processing.

i got a crackit script from highend 3d and it allows you use a cutting plane and split the object into separate "solid" pieces (in lw, or with a standard boolean, you'd have to reconstruct the seam by copying pasting).

the maya script basically was a really manual way of doing what c4 did.

ack... lame.
