View Full Version : Pro-IP bill...What is it?

Sorry to start another political thread here but I'm a bit confused as to what this one is and how will it affect us as artists and as webdwellers. :)

OK so I hear this one law got signed by Mr. Bush called the Pro-IP bill and it was suppose to be a push from the RIAA and/or MPAA. However, I do hear a whole lot of other things about it like really strictly enforcing the use of license music on Demo reels or if you're making machinima movies and using soundtracks on it. So I'm a bit lost as to what really is going on there.

What I really want to know is how would it really affect us regular folks. Would it now allow the government to scan your computer your workstation for illegal mp3s and take it away if they found 1? how strict is it when it comes to youtube movies, unlicensed anime fansubs and demo-reels with licensed songs?

Thanks in advance for all you advice.

On a personal level, it really shouldn't directly affect normal citizens like you or me, unless you or I are "power-sharers" or somesuch.

It is though a very expensive gamble by the MPAA/RIAA that paid off. They spent alot of money purchasing votes in support of this legislation that, in effect, gives them their own bureaucratic channels/web in Washington. A web of offices and sub-offices that they will staff to spread their efforts to control and arrest creation and distribution in the digital world. Their efforts will now have the imprimature of the Federal Government!

That's a problem as these organizations have shown no respect for due process and the protections of our Constitution.

Surprisingly, The Wall Street Journal (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122367645363324303.html) today published an Op-Ed piece describing life's realities, as opposed to the head-in-the-sand denial of Big Content.

xkcd (http://xkcd.com/488/) also recently published a cartoon reflecting life as it moves on way ahead of the old laws.

Here's (http://www.techdirt.com/search.php?site=&q=pro+ip) a neat history of the legislation as it worked its way through Congress.
