View Full Version : How do I make a Volumetric conform to a shape?

Hello,

I can create a volumetric light, but I'd like to contain that volumetric texture to a particular shape, rather than it coming from a light.

Is there a way to make a volumetric object? Can I use a polygonal object to contain the shape of a volumetric texture?

Where's Australia again?

- Have you tried it the other way around using shapes as volumetric lights? As in light an exclusive object with transparency, luminosity and translucency etc?

Hi Meshpig,

I want to make a volumetric shape, rather than texture polygons. There's a difference, especially when the object is rotated, where a volumetric shape will reveal it's inner substance.

I found that I can add the Hypervoxel plug-in to an object, and volumetric particles appear on the vertices of the object. This is getting close.

Imagine you could create a volumetric shape, like a cloudy texture, but made it in the shape of a human. How could you do that with true 3D volumetrics?

OK, I can imagine but how do you mean "true 3D volumetrics"? Voxels (volumetric pixels) only appear to have "volume". A shape is defined by Geometry, even metaballs.

Random Pricks (ooh-er!) on the surface to give the basic form.

Random points inside the object itself for internal volumetrics.

Thanks, Meshpig and Korvar for answering. I will try using a cloud of points to form the shape.

If it is not possible to control the shape of a single Hypervoxel, then maybe that is a feature that Newtek should develop.

I think ogo_taiki had an option like that. You chose an object and the cloud looks like that object. If a great magician created a volumetric plugin that could limit the volumetric to the polygon walls it would be nice.

Maybe it's possible to make a preocedural that shows up in hypervoxels and accepts an object to limit the size of the voxel?(o great dpont hear our prayers)

Thanks for that information, 'ercaxus'. I just Googled, and the ogo_taiki does create volumetric shapes.

Website is here:

Scroll to near the bottom of the page for examples of volumetric textures. I don't think I can do that in Lightwave without a plug-in.
