Is there a way to automatically apply/convert a surface color to a vertex color map? Like using a script or something? The goal would be for the model to look exactly the same visually.

You'd have to have each surface as a separate part, as you can only have one colour per vertex.
If that's okay, then I could knock one up...

Yeah, each surface only has one color. But a mesh may have multiple surfaces/materials applied, but they don't overlap. I wouldn't even know how to do that or if its possible to layer surfaces/materials.

If you could make a script to do that, it would be awesome.

You can add the Shader "Surface Baker" in the Shaders tab in the Surface Editor to bake to a vmap.

VMapManager from TrueArt's Modeling Pack http://modelingpack.trueart.eu has command to load vertex map (also weight) from image file.
