Hi !
Perhaps nobody think about that...

1) i know that some free woman bluescreens exists and can be used.
But why not propose a 3d man (and woman) model for the newbies as me ! You know just basics shapes. Rigged to have the correct human proportion and movements ! (Mine model is ok. Today i'm working to have the good proportions (correct leg size, arm size...) So i could compare my model with it.

2) Kurv propose very interesting video to model a man. Larry is the best to explain this. But there are not video to model a woman ? Why not ?

Ok... so it was a bad idea to discuss about that. Time to me to returns on 2d classic woman blueprints an use them to correct my model

Couldn't you just get Makehuman, output to an obj, load it up in a background layer in Modeler, and check your proportions that way?

My vote is for the MakeHuman route. Poser also exports in OBJ format.

I'm doing a similar thing with a male base model. I took some top, left, front, back renders out of a standard G2 male poser model to get the proportions. Set up some backdrop images and modeled a fairly light weight mesh that I could poke and prod into variations. I do think its easier once the basic flow has been done once and generally correct.

Its a pain hunting for those perfect top, front, right images as photos and this is where some stock 3d models really help. I only use the photos for different heads and hair.

I tried simplifying a poser obj once. Losing battle. Found I could model it from reference faster than trimming down the mesh density from poser.

When all else fails, you could try 3d.sk It's pretty inexpensive and you can download as many references as you could use.

I don't recommend using the "make human" types of software, if you are trying to learn to model accurate humans.

Use a reference. There are plenty out there and it can be from magazines or even websites, like clothing websites.

3d.sk (as above) is an excellent resource for nude or clothed reference models.

You can set the image in the background of Modeler to use as a guide.
