I think I have a corrupted cookie on my PC which is messing the notification for new stuff. How do I locate the cookie and wipe it, without wiping the whole lot?

If you're in FireFox you can go to the preferences, then the privacy tab, then click on the "show cookies..." button.

From there you'll get a list of all the sites, and you'll be able to open the little triangles to see all the cookies for that site. You can select each one and remove it.

(this is on a Mac too btw. It might vary a little on Windows)
