View Full Version : Parts to Weight map plugin/script?

Does anyone know of a plugin/ script that will convert "parts" to "weight maps"?

I have an OBJ that has all the "parts" named but I would like to convert them to weight maps so I can assign each part to its skelegon.

I don't know of anything, it would be handy though. You might just have to select each part and manually make the weight maps...

It seems like such an obvious plugin/ script, i'm suprised one doesn't exist.

Alot of people check Limited Range on the bone properties panel. & only use weight maps where they have to.

I've used Limited Range on bones before and didn't get on with it aswell as using weights.

Weight maps can be fun and precise; and I wanted to be able to introduce a parts to weight map script/ plugin into my workflow so as to speed up a process I was working on.
I had twenty OBJs in a sequence and it would be very handy to convert all their part names just 20 times instead of having to convert all the weight maps on each OBJ individually.

Can anyone write a quick script that would benifit the whole community?

Try this.. :)
If it works, I will add some time later to TrueArt's Modeling Pack http://modelingpack.trueart.eu

Sensei. Thanks for this. :)
Problem is I can't use it as i'm on a Mac and this must be a PC plugin, so I can't test it. :(
(I should have mentioned that in previous posts) :bangwall:

If it works on a PC then you have helped other LightWavers out there.

UB or CFM?

I'm running LW9.3 on a MacBook Pro OSX 10.4.11 UB (and eagerly anticipating the release of a non-beta version of 9.5!)

Thanks for working on this Sensei.
I will test it today and let you know how it performs.

Tested the UB plugin using LW9.3 by loading in an OBJ with 20 part names. Ran the plugin and all parts converted to weight maps, no problems at all.

Sensei, thanks so much for making this plugin. :)

No problem.. :) I have other plug-ins for Mac UB if you want to take a look http://modelingpack.trueart.eu
They're covering almost all modeling techniques like: spline modeling (EasySpline), edge extending (EasyMesh, EasySplit), box-modeling (EasySplit), weight and vertex maps (VMapManager, Show Weights, Show Edge Weights), sculpting (TrueBump), selections, etc.

The plugins look really cool, but being a student I can't afford them at the moment.
There are lots of useful tools I want to buy one day and yours have been added to my shopping list.
