Should I assume you have the latest QT Player?
The current version is 7.5.5. I don't have any problems playing H.264-encoded videos with that version of QT, but I always upgrade to "Pro". I doubt that would have anything to do with it though.
Might want to try uninstalling and reinstalling it, or run the update thingy.

H264 is just a codec, a way of compressing video, high quality.

Different H264 codecs are out there, Quicktime has one. As it happens, an in-depth test I read up about H264 showed Apple's H264 to be the worst, struggling to playback at 1080p where other H264 codecs were sweet.

Not surprising really - we find Quicktime generally to be sh*te, slow and inefficient in its player. Mind you this is coming from the company who claimed they had an excellent MPEG4 codec, released in QT6. Twat head Steve Jobs announced to the Apple congregation that Microsoft weren't even thinking about it - to ruptures of applause as you would expect from the brainwashed.

The smart ones of us realise that Apple only made an MPEG4 codec to battle against DivX which was gaining a lot of ground. DivX of course began as a hacked version of a Microsoft MPEG4 codec from years before.... jeez....

Bad Apple.

Are you using more than 1 B-Frame?
What partitions are you using? any other than p4x4 or are you using 8x8 DCT?
Are you using weight predictions or B-Frame macroblocking?

Any h264 or x264 file encoded without the strict (and very sh!tty) settings Apple wants you to use for their h264 encoded movie will either not play, or have serious troubles when playing.

http://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/x264Options

check the quicktime compatibility tab, and make sure to turn off the following options :
* b-pyramid
* mbaff

also , i suggest setting b-frames to 1, disabling 8x8dct and do not use a custom Quantization matrix.

When using vista ultimate 64, its working well. I like QT a lot, i just think its the windows port thats stinks...
