View Full Version : My first experiments with Dielectric and SSS

It's my wife's birthday today so yesterday I knocked up this fairly cheesy 'home made' birthday card.

I'd never used the dielectric or SSS shaders before (of LW final gathering come to think of it) but I was quite happy with the results I got with the dielectric shader.
The surface for the cake and the candle were made by simply changing the colours on RebelHill's Jade preset from presetcentral. I turned on interpolated reflections to make the surfaces look softer. So I can't say I've delved into the intricacies of the sigma 2 node yet.

Oh! - the boxes in the background have tobien's 'holographic sprinkles' preset applied to them but I forgot to put proper UV's on the boxes so it hasn't worked out too well

needs a bit more AA ?

tobien's 'holographic sprinkles' ??
Don't think I've seen them yet....

Yeah definitely needs more AA but I only had a couple of hours of render time so had to play it safe =]

As for the holographic sprinkles, I can't get a direct link from presetcentral but if you go to the 'surfaces - strange' subcategory it's the fourth preset down the list.

I actually just used a cubic map, which would probably be fine for this, but you'd need to make sure the scale was right for them to show :)

Pretty cool, though your cake could have maybe had a lower reflective value and more of a Fresnel gradient on the reflection.

Nice card! :)
