Hi All,

Just done some super crude tests with LW9.5's new SSS nodes and I have o tsay I am really really impressed! It's fast and smooth - great stuff.

I have to say that I'm starting to appreciate LW more again. It really does seem like it's growinf nicely. Some organisation of the interface etc is needed but that sounds like an ideal Version 10 job.

Some more work to make Hypervoxels even better would be great.

If/when they get these new SSS nodes working with hypervoxels there are going to be some seriously cool effects made possible....

Like what? An exploding lava filled SSS buddha with fire flies?

Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking..... :)

Which is actually the latest/best sss type shader in 9.5 though?
There are so many sss shaders and materials now (10), it's getting back to the old clutter problem modeler had of having 10 different tools to do the same thing.

Is there a video toturial on how to setup SSS on an object. Thanks

found it

The SSS nodes don't all do the same thing since they all have a specific look and render speed to them. I agree about the clutter though it would be better to have a few nodes that are more flexible but that doesn't seem to be lightwave's forte.

can you post a link to that tutorial about setting up SSS. Hopefully it refers to newer implimentations.

I second that. Pleeeasse

I'm away from my desk, when I'm back in the office, I'll see what I can post.

it just renders black for me....any settings you got to turn on

Here you go. I've just found that you need to light it from behind and infront, and have fairly high SSS settings (esp front).

Hope that helps, just ask if it doesn't work fo you.

Now go and join judge13.com! :) I want some wavers on there!

Really Fast now...WOW!

Yes, until this last shader was added, I just found SSS in LW to be too slow for commercial use. With the new node, it really is possible. That kind of change makes all the difference. They just need to make volumetrics work with motion blur/depth of field properly and add all shading nodes to HV and wow, that'd be cool!

Nice. . .I take it you no longer have to have a water tight object to use SSS1 and 2?

Also, try the new "interpolated" setting inside of the fast skin and simple skin material. Speeds things up by at least 150% Turn down the quality on fast skin to 70% or so and it will still look great.
