I'm rendering a big old 3000x1500 image, to be converted to a quicktime VR (thanks starbase tutorial) so I hit F9 and wait twenty minutes and then, nothing happens.

The viewer is active, but it doesnt come up. I noticed that if I do a smaller render, and leave the viewer up, and then do the big one, it shows the portion of the image that will fit, with no means of scrolling or seeing the rest of the image, but if its not up allready it doesnt even try.

I know I can render a still to a specific file name via rendering a "sequence" of 1 frame, but I was just curious if there is anyway to retrieve the information that the computer just spent twenty minutes generating if cant see the viewer?

Try the up down & side arrows. I found this out by accendent. When I did a huge render, I only saw a piece of it but using the arrows will show it. You can also save it as a file and you can resize the view as well.
